I was commissioned to make a tea cosy, and for some reason my crochet brain decided that what was really needed was a rainbow-tailed mermaid cat. So, here she is.
The tail is made with tubular dragon stitch, with decreases and a sideways bend. My first time trying this, so it was a bit of a challenge.
I made the scaffolding for the tail first, then added the scales. Some fudging went on to get all the scales to alternate.
Cosy on a teapot close in size to the one I’m making for. The actual teapot she is made for is dark blue, so hopefully the spout and handle will look like her arms.
Side view showing some detail of her tail flukes.
I gave her tail a bit of a bend to suggest movement and give some life.
The dragon scales take up a lot of yarn, but show off the rainbow graduation nicely. I used two different rainbow yarns.
I’m working from a picture and measurements, so I hope everything will fit!
Showing the bottom of the pot. I sewed the tubular dragon stitch closed at the bottom.
All done and ready to go!
This one nearly got away from me, and I resisted working on it for a while because I was scared of messing it up. The tubular dragon scale was challenging, so I worked the framework first and added the scales afterwards. There was some unravelling and remaking that went on!
One thing I can say for her is she’s definitely colourful, with two different types of rainbow yarn in her tail. I hope she makes her new owners smile.
